Professor Rajan – external discussant for first SEACEN Research Workshop
Professor Ramkishen Rajan participated in the South East Asian Central Banks (SEACEN) research project on "Household Indebtedness and its Implications for Financial Stability." The workshop took place from June 22—23 in Kuala Lumpur.
 
PhD Student Douglas Anderson to present at the 2009 Annual Research Meeting of Academy Health
PhD student Douglas Anderson has been selected to make a poster presentation on June 28 of his research paper "Why Do Physician Group Practices Engage in Quality Performance Measurements?" at the 2009 annual research meeting of Academy Health in Chicago.
   
University Professor, Director of the Center for Transportation, Policy, Operations, and Logistics, and Director of the Aerospace Policy Research Center, Kenneth J. Button - chairs the first NECTAR conference in the U.S.
The School of Public Policy hosted the first meeting of the Transatlantic Network on European Communications and Transport Activities Research (NECTAR) in the United States. The conference was held from June 18-19, 2009 in Arlington, Virginia and chaired by Professor Kenneth J. Button.   NECTAR involves clusters which network to share information among experts in the field of transport and communication. The association fosters cooperative research.
   
PhD Student Wahab – presenter at event sponsored by World Bank's Values and Development Group
PhD student Bilal Wahab presented "Corruption and Anti-Corruption Efforts in Iraqi Kurdistan" during a June 5 event at the World Bank, sponsored by its Values and Development Group. The presentation and discussion focused on governance challenges in Iraqi Kurdistan.
   
University Professor, Director of the Center for Transportation, Policy, Operations, and Logistics, and Director of the Aerospace Policy Research Center, Kenneth J. Button – keynote speaker at ITrEC Conference
Professor Kenneth J. Button delivered the keynote address, "Transportation, Economics, the Really Dismal Science?" at the International Transport Economics Conference at the University of Minnesota's Hubert H. Humphrey Institute in Minneapolis. The conference was from June 1-16, 2009.
   
Professor Rozell - presenter at DC event concerning Protestantism and America
Professor Mark Rozell presented "Religion and the American Presidency" on June 2 at the Nyack College DC-sponsored event "Protestantism in America: Historic Roots and Current Relevance." The event at the Hall of States Building was also sponsored by the Center for Global Education, the Institute for Religious Studies, the Vietnamese Academy of Social Sciences, Baylor University and the Institute for Global Engagement.
   
Professor Pfiffner - winner of book award
Professor James Pfiffner's book Power Play won the silver medal for 2008 Political Science Book of the Year awarded by ForeWord magazine. The award was announded at BookExpo America in New York City on June 1. According to the magazine's web site, the winners "were selected by dozens of librarians and booksellers who are experts in the subject matter of the books they judged, and who make purchasing decisions daily for their collections or bookstores." Professor Katrin Anacker part of team to work on Long Island 2035 Comprehensive Regional Sustainability Plan
Professor Katrin Anacker was chosen by ARUP, a global consulting company, as one of several consultants to work on the Long Island 2035 Comprehensive Regional Sustainability Plan. Together with Lawrence Levy, Director of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY, Anacker is responsible for the collection of data for this project.
   
Alumna Casucci selected as Presidential Management Fellow
Shannon Casucci (MPP ’09) was selected as a Presidential Management Fellow. The highly selective program attracts people with an interest in public policy to federal service. Casucci was placed with the General Services Administration-Public Buildings Service in June.

Associate Dean Gifford participant at Information Technology and Innovation Foundation Event
Associate Dean Jonathan Gifford participated as part of a panel discussion at the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation event: Smart Roads, Smart Cars: How IT is Transforming Transportation on May 14. The panel  discussed policies Congress and the Administration can consider for IT to enhance mobility, transportation safety, and positively affect the environment. The event took place at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, DC. Audio and video from the event is available online.
   
Professor Wedel - panelist at Post-Communist Era: Challenges and Opportunities conference
Professor Janine Wedel participated on the panel "Lessons Learned from the 1989 Revolution in Central Europe" at The Post-Communist Era: Challenges and Opportunities conference, which was held at Princeton University on May 10-12.
   
Professor Malawer appointed to Va. Economic Development Partnership Board of Directors
Professor Stuart Malawer was presented the commission of appointment to the Board of Directors of the Virginia Economic Development Partnership by Governor Kaine on May 7.

Alumna Alison White honored with SPP Distinguished Alumni Award
Alison M. White (MPP '05) was awarded the SPP Distinguished Alumni Award at the George Mason University Alumni Association's Celebration of Distinction event on April 30. She has been active in the SPP Alumni Chapter serving as vice president from 2006 to 2007, president from 2007 to 2008, and treasurer from 2008 to 2009. Her innovation and leadership have been instrumental in the success of such projects as Meet the SPP Authors and the 2008 SPP Alumni Chapter Signature Event.

PhD student Jill A. Rough received the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Scholarship award on April 17.

Professor Wayne D. Perry presented "Will Nuclear Arms Reduction Policy Deter or Dissuade Proliferation?: New Multi-Player Models May Help Structure the Answer" at the Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center conference, What Is Needed?: The Way Ahead for WMD Policy, at George Mason University's Arlington Campus on April 16.

Professor John McClain discussed the national economy and the housing market at the National Association of Local Housing Finance Agencies Educational Conference in Washington, D.C. on April 16.

PhD student Bilal Wahab paticipated in a panel on "The Future of the Destroyed Iraq: Where is everyone headed?" at Yale University on April 9.
   
Professor Goldstone - presenter at World Bank's Headline Seminar
Professor Jack Goldstone presented "Responding to Deterioration in Fragile and Conflict-Affected States" at the World Bank's Headline Seminar for senior bank management on April 8. Goldstone was one of a dozen experts invited to address the bank's leaders on how to identify and respond to deterioration in political stability. Other presenters were Gareth Evans, president of the International Crisis Group and former foreign minister of Australia; Ed Luck, International Peace Institute and special advisor to the UN secretary general; and Alvaro de Soto, former UN assistant secretary-general.
   
Adjunct Professor Bonnie Stabile presents paper at the Midwest Political Science Association Meeting in Chicago
Adjunct Professor Bonnie Stabile presented "An Investigation of the Role of Women Legislators in the Establishment of State Infertility Insurance Laws" on April 3 in a poster session at the 67th annual national conference of the Midwest Political Science Association.
   
PhD student Szymalak – presenter at Midwest Political Science Association Annual Conference
PhD student Jim Szymalak presented "Are Conservative Protestant Beliefs within the U.S. Military and Political Leadership Impeding the Effectiveness of U.S. Counterinsurgency Strategies?" on April 2 at the Midwest Political Science Association annual national conference in Chicago.
   
Professor Perry and PhD student Coleman present at 2009 IEEE World Congress
Professor Wayne Perry presented, with coauthors SPP PhD student David Coleman and Mason School of Management Professor Allen Hughes, the paper "The Role of Data Governance to Relieve Information Sharing Impairments in the Federal Government" on April 1 at the 2009 IEEE World Congress on Computer Science and Information Engineering, in Los Angeles.

PhD students Ryan Zelnio and Yu Jin Jung participated on organizing committee for annual Graduate Student Research conference on Science and Technology. Professors David Hart and Todd LaPorte moderated panels
PhD students Ryan Zelnio and Yu Jin Jung were members of the organizing committee for the annual Graduate Student Research Conference on Science Technology and Society held at the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C. on March 28-29. The conference's featured speakers included eminent academics and senior policymakers. Zelnio presented his paper "Understanding the Global Interdependence of Scientists: A Case Study of Transnational Knowledge Networks in Nanotechnology Research."

Professor Wayne Perry participated in Las Vegas in the Teaching the Nuclear Age Institute on March 28, which was sponsored by the Foreign Policy Research Institute, the American Academy of Diplomacy, and the Atomic Testing Museum.
   
Professor Auerswald – presenter at Skoll World Forum
Professor Philip Auerswald presented "Re-envision Social Entrepreneurship Education" as part of the plenary session on March 25 at the Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship at the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School.
   
Professor Acs – keynote speaker at United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research Workshop. PhD alumna, S. Desai – presenter at workshop
Professor Zoltan Acs delivered the keynote address, "Destructive Entrepreneurship in the 21st Century" at the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research Workshop on Entrepreneurship and Conflict at the University of Ulster, Londonderry, Northern Ireland on March 19-21. Acs, Sameeksha Desai (SPP PhD 2008 alumna), and Utz Weitzel presented "A Theory of Destructive Entrepreneurship" on the first day of the workshop. Desai also presented "The Political Economy of Entrepreneurship in Najaf: Primary Data from Business Owners" and "The Scope of Entrepreneurs in Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration Processes."
   
Professor Button – chair of 50th annual Transportation Research Forum, SPP PhD students Yuan, Hardy, Doh, and Zhou and SPP PhD alumnus Thibault - presenters
As president of the Transportation Research Forum, Professor Ken Button chaired its 50th annual forum in Portland, Oregon on March 15-18. Button delivered the keynote address, "Planning for the Future in Transit." On March 16, Button, along with SPP PhD students Junyang Yuan, Matthew Hardy, Soogwan Doh, and Xin Zhou, presented "The Accuracy of Transit System Ridership Forecasts and Capital Cost Estimates." On March 17, SPP 2004 PhD alumnus Marc A. Thibault (U.S. Coast Guard) delivered with CDR Erik A. Anderson (U.S. Coast Guard) "An Exploratory Analysis of Collisions, Allisions, and Groundings in U.S. Navigable Waters." On March 18, Hardy presented "Transit Response to Congestion Pricing Opportunities: Theory, Policy, and Practice in the United States."
   
Professor Auerswald – panelist at Kauffman Foundation Conference
Professor Philip Auerswald participated on a panel discussion of current national policies on March 13 at the Kauffman Foundation-sponsored conference What Industry Wants from Universities, which was held at the University of California-San Diego.
   
Professor Button hosted Space Economy Symposium
In his role as director of the Center for Aerospace Policy Research, Button hosted a Space Economy Symposium on March 13 at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C.
   
Alumnus Ron Hira awarded tenure at RIT
Ron Hira (PhD '02) was awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor (effective September 2009) at the Rochester Institute of Technology's Science Technology and Society/Public Policy Department. His SPP dissertation was "Electronic Commerce and Manufacturing Supply Chain Integration and Management: Approaches to Improve Government Policies."

PhD Student Magness presents paper at Indiana Association of Historians annual meeting
Phillip W. Magness (PhD student) presented his paper "Colonization after the Emancipation Proclamation: Abraham Lincoln's Emigration Projects in Belize and British Guyana, 1863–1864" at the Indiana Association of Historians 29th annual meeting: Lincoln's Legacy on February 27. The conference took place February 27–28 in Fort Wayne.
   
Professor Manheim speaks on renewable energy policy
Affiliate Professor Frank Manheim spoke on renewable energy policy on February 23 at the Arlington Learning in Retirement Institute in Arlington, Virginia.

Professor Kenneth Button presented "The Economic Challenges of Framing a National Transportation Policy" on February 20 at the Mercatus Center's Chief of Staff Retreat in Philadelphia.
   
PhD Student Douglas Anderson and MPP Student Shannon Howard - presenters at Graduate Research Conference
PhD Student Douglas G. Anderson presented his paper, "Eye of the Celtic Tiger: Cultural Issues in Economic Growth and Immigrant Assimilation" and MPP Student Shannon R. Howard presented her paper, "The Life and Death of the Millennium Challenge Corporation" on February 20 at the 7th Graduate Research Conference at Old Dominion University.  Howard's winning paper will be published in the conference's peer-reviewed International Topics Journal (May 2009).

Professor Christopher T. Hill presented "Science and Technology Information for Congress: Can Wikipedia Do the Job?" on February 12 during the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting in Chicago.

Professor Janine Davidson will be one of a distinguished panel on February 12 at the Washington, D.C. conference, "Defense Showstoppers: National Security Challenges for the Obama Administration," sponsored by the Reserve Officers Association and the Foreign Policy Research Institute. On February 10 in his lecture "Lincoln and the Executive Prerogative" Professor Rozell discusses the constitutional foundations of Lincoln's use of executive powers.

Professor David M. Hart presented the paper "Talent for a Knowledge-Based and Innovation-Oriented Economy: Hong Kong's Challenges and Opportunities" co-written by Hart and SPP PhD student Fangmeng (Tim) Tian at the Hong Kong Innovation Project conference on January 9. The conference was sponsored by the Savantas Policy Institute and the Central Policy Unit of the Hong Kong SAR government.
